Closed or ventilated?
Closed walls do three things ventilated walls cannot: they stop small items falling through, they keep dust and contamination out, and they hide the contents from view in transit. That makes them the standard for parts, hardware, documents, retail stock and anything moving through a public or shared space.
The cost is airflow. A closed crate holds heat and moisture, so anything freshly washed, respiring or temperature-sensitive will suffer in one. Produce, seafood and bakery goods belong in ventilated crates for that reason.
Closed crates also tend to be marginally heavier than their ventilated equivalents at the same size, since there is more material in the walls. On a large standing order that difference shows up in freight.
