What produce needs from a crate
Harvested produce keeps respiring, giving off heat, moisture and ethylene. A crate that traps all three shortens shelf life measurably — which is why produce crates are ventilated on every face rather than only on the sides.
Airflow has to reach the middle of a pallet, not just its outside, so the slot pattern and the way crates stack on each other both matter. A crate that seats flush and blocks the vents of the one below defeats the purpose.
The second requirement is washdown. Produce crates cycle between field, packhouse and retail, and a crate that cannot be cleaned properly between loads becomes a contamination path. Ours are moulded in food-grade HDPE with drainage through the base.
